In the year 2006, the prevalence of an Internet connection at home was most widespread in Iceland compared with other European households. That year 62% of households within the EU had access to the Internet whereas 83% of Icelandic households had access to the Internet. In the first quarter of 2006, 88% of the Icelandic population in the 16–74 age group had used the Internet during the three months preceding the interview. At the same time 54% of EU citizens were Internet users.
