The total health expenditure in Iceland has increased from just over 6.3% of GDP in the beginning of the 1980’s to 8.9% of GDP in 2019, corresponding to 269 billion ISK. In 2018, the total health expenditure amounted to 8.77% of GDP. The general government health expenditure amounted to 224 billion ISK in 2019, around 83% of total health expenditure. In 2019, the private health expenditure amounted to 44.6 billion ISK, a 16.6% share of total health expenditure.
