On 1 January 2019 the population of Iceland was 356,991, compared with 348,450 1 January 2018. The population growth was 2.5% or 8,541 persons. This increase was mainly due to positive net migration in 2018 together with natural population growth (births less deaths). The population has grown in the past five years by an annual average growth rate of 1.9%.
