Every autumn Statistics Iceland collects data on enrolled students from schools at the upper secondary and tertiary level. These data include the number of students, sex, line of study, progress of study and mode of teaching. The number of students has been increasing every year and in autumn 2007 there are 46,068 students enrolled, more than ever before. The number of registered students has increased by 4.4% since 2007. The number of registered students is increasing both at the upper secondary and tertiary level. The number of registered students has increased by 5.1% at the upper secondary level since 2006 while at the tertiary level the increase is 3.2%. This increase is mainly due to a large increase in the number of students in distance learning programs.
