The population of Iceland at the end of the second quarter 2024 was 386,970, 198,360 males, 188,420 females and non-binary/other were 180. The population increased by 2,230 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the Capital region were 246,770 and 140,200 lived in others regions.
The method for estimating the population was revised in March 2024 and the time series have been updated from 2011 onwards.
A total of 1,090 children were born in the second quarter and 640 persons died. Net migration was 1,780 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was 180, and 1,600 for foreign citizens. Net migration of males and females were the same, or 890 for each sex. Foreign citizens were 65,870, or 17.0% of the total population in Iceland by the end of the second quarter 2024.
A new method for estimating the population in Iceland
Statistics Iceland publishes now for the first time population statistics calculated with a new method. Until now, population statistics have been based only on registration of legal residence in the national register. The new method is founded on a broader base of register data, tax data and data on students in addition to the national register.
